Agios Georgios (Methana)

37° 38.3′ N · 23° 23.7′ E · approximate

A tiny fishing harbour on the north coast of Methana, made by locals who sank a barge off the eastern headland and built a rock wall from the west. Authentic, quiet and hospitable, but only for shoal-draft boats.

Practical

Coordinate is approx: set between the two OSM breakwaters (37.63822N 23.39493E and 37.63823N 23.3935E). SailingIssues: too shallow for larger charter yachts; the seabed inside rises quickly to under 1 m, so stay within a couple of boat lengths of the east mole; entrance under 3 m (C-MAP 2.5 m, Eagleray 2.9 m); obstruction north-west of the red light; best berths near the red light (3 m); all-round shelter except in northerlies over Force 6; good holding in sand and weed; dangerous to enter or leave in strong winds. Yachting Monthly (July 2019): the author, drawing 1.4 m, anchored and backed onto the breakwater with 35 m of chain and found room for about four or five yachts; fresh-water tap on the east side; sandy beach with a shower; a small shop to the west; a well-equipped taverna; good coastal walks both ways. Leave before a NW Force 5-6. Taverna Agiorgitiko is mapped on the waterfront (OpenStreetMap).
