Methana Peninsula Hiking Trails

37° 36.9′ N · 23° 21.5′ E

A network of old paths linking Methana's villages, lava domes and craters around the hill of Profitis Ilias; the peninsula's high point, Chelona, reaches 740 m.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM Profitis Ilias summit (37.61427N 23.35797E), the hub of the network. cycladen.be (updated Nov 2019) describes 13 numbered walks starting from Methana town, Vathi, Megalochori, Megalopotami, Kypseli and Kameni Chora; some signs are faded and sections are overgrown, though volunteers cleared several paths 2011-2019. Walk 6 links Vathi harbour to Megalochori in about 35 minutes each way. Carry water and a GPX; little shade. OpenStreetMap now carries mapped hiking relations, e.g. 'Methana - Profitis Ilias', 'Kammeni - Agios Athanasios - Methana' and 'Volcano - Mouskes - Methana' traverses, useful for offline map apps.
