Kameno Vouno Volcano Crater Hike

37° 37.1′ N · 23° 20.0′ E

A short, rugged climb through black lava boulders to the 230 BC eruption site above Kameni Chora, ending at a cave-like vent signed 'volcano' with huge views over the Saronic Gulf, best at sunset.

Practical

OpenStreetMap: Kameno Vouno at 37.61873N 23.33299E (the historic volcano, last eruption 230 BC). Route (cycladen.be walk 8): from Kameni Chora follow the asphalt road towards Makrylongos for 1.5 km (about 20 minutes) to the 'Volcano' sign before the 'Makrylongos 8 km' road sign; the waymarked path (red/white signs, red and blue stripes) climbs through lava for about 17-20 minutes to the top; total walking time about 35 minutes from the road. Wear real shoes: the lava is sharp and loose. From Vathi harbour you can walk to Kameni Chora or take a taxi (SailingIssues). Taverna Ifestio in Kameni Chora. Methana has dozens of lava domes up to 740 m, and the peninsula is the north-west end of the active Aegean volcanic arc (SailingIssues, Wikipedia).
