Winter south-easterlies (Rhodes & Symi)

36° 27.0′ N · 28° 15.0′ E · approximate

Outside the meltemi season (roughly November–May), south-easterly and southerly gales are the danger in this corner of the Dodecanese. They turn usually safe harbours into traps.

Practical

Position approx: off Rhodes town. Sailing Issues: avoid entering or leaving Rhodes town ports in strong SE; strong south-easterlies (only November–May) can make Symi Marina's mole unmanageable; at Marathounda a strong winter southerly sends dangerous waves onto the beach; Gialos is exposed to NE in winter and to swell in prolonged southerlies (Noonsite). Halki's Emborio is dangerous in ENE–SSE and spring easterlies are a problem. Noonsite (2015) recorded 50-knot easterlies with a violent surge inside Rhodes Marina.
