Samos South-Coast Fall Winds

37° 41.4′ N · 26° 39.6′ E · approximate

When the meltemi blows over Samos, katabatic gusts pour down the south faces of Mount Kerkis and the island's high ground, hitting the south-coast bays and the Samos-Fourni channel far harder than the open-sea wind suggests.

Practical

Marathokambos is subject to very violent gusts and can become untenable in a strong meltemi (the wind turbines on the ridge are a clue); Limnionas gets strong gusts; even sheltered Posidonio and Psili Ammos see strong gusts. The Samos-Fourni channel typically runs one Beaufort force stronger than the surrounding sea - stay as far as possible from Samos and its Kerkis katabatics when transiting. Mid-June to mid-September the meltemi can blow F7-8 (occasionally 9) for 3-4 days at a time. Position is a point in the Bay of Marathokampos (approx) representing the SW coast.
