Petrified Forest of Lesvos (Sigri)

39° 12.7′ N · 25° 51.3′ E

Twenty-million-year-old sequoias, pines and laurels turned to stone where they stood under volcanic ash — a UNESCO Global Geopark site with upright trunks, roots and even fossil leaves, explained in the Natural History Museum in Sigri village.

Practical

Coordinate is the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in Sigri (OpenStreetMap), a short walk from the anchorage; tel +30 22530 54434, info@lesvosmuseum.gr. The Sigri park (south of the village) is entered via the museum grounds; the Plaka park, 800 m south of Sigri on a small peninsula, holds what Visit Lesvos calls the largest standing petrified trunk in the world (13.7 m perimeter); the main Petrified Forest park lies inland between Sigri and Antissa (39.2055, 25.9006). The Nisiopi Marine Park on the islet at the mouth of Sigri bay has walking routes, a 17.2 m upright sequoia and glass-bottom boat tours. Check seasonal hours with the museum.
