Nisiopi (Megalonisi) Petrified Forest Marine Park
39° 13.0′ N · 25° 50.1′ E
The islet that shelters Sigri bay is itself a petrified-forest park, with a 17-metre fossil sequoia still standing where it grew and a lighthouse watching over the channel.
Practical
Coordinate is the Megalonisi nature reserve in OpenStreetMap. Visit Lesvos: hiking routes around the islet and a special glass-bottom boat circumnavigation to see fossils on the seabed; finds include an upright sequoia trunk 17.20 m long and 1.70 m across at the base and a 12.44 m fallen pine ancestor. Organised through the Petrified Forest museum (tel +30 22530 54434). Do not land or collect fossils except on the managed routes.
Best for
Fossils above and below the water off Sigri
