Pedi Bay (Symi)

36° 36.9′ N · 27° 51.5′ E

A deep, fertile bay a short walk over the hill from Gialos, with a village of tavernas, a new marina and room to anchor. It is calmer and cheaper than the main harbour.

Practical

Entrance: keep Pazmadi islet, joined to the coast by a reef, to starboard (Sailing Issues). Premium anchoring is in front of the pastel blue-and-yellow Pedi Beach Hotel, or in 5–8 m north of the end of the west pier, over sand and weed with some rock and mud to the north; holding can be good, but check it. mySea: anchor in 6–10 m north or south of the quay; holding moderate to poor depending on the bottom. A few yachts can go stern-to, bows-to or alongside the west pier, which is used by fishing and tripper boats and occasional freighters, so you may be asked to leave. Grecosailor reports a boat holding in 14 m of mud with 70 m of chain at 'Kaiki Beach' inside the bay, even in gusts over 40 kn, though others dragged. Strong gusts, mostly SW–NW. A transport ship and water tanker sometimes disturb the calm. Ashore: Taverna Tolis in the NW corner ('excellent dishes for low prices'), a well-stocked liquor mini-market in the SW corner, and a bus from the quay to Gialos. Symi town is a 25-minute walk.
