Agios Fokas Anchorage (Kos)

36° 51.4′ N · 27° 21.2′ E · approximate

A dark-sand beach tucked just south-west of Cape Agios Fokas, the south-east tip of Kos, a few miles from Kos town and close to the Embros Therma hot springs. It is a lunch-stop and swim off a quiet beach, not a night harbour.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: about 250 m south of the Agios Fokas beach outline in OpenStreetMap (way 766029426), placed off the beach on the south side of the cape; it is not a surveyed anchoring position, and none of the cruising guides used here (Sailing Issues, mySea, Noonsite) describe anchoring depths or holding for this spot, so sound in and check the bottom before dropping. The big hazard is wind: ActiveCaptain's hazard listing at the SE point of Kos (36.8565 N, 27.3631 E) warns that very heavy gusts appear here, easily up to 35 knots, and a 2023 report describes strong NNE gusts; kite and windsurfers use the area, so keep a lookout. In a meltemi the beach is under the land, but the gusts come off it; open to the south and east. Ashore: hotels, a supermarket and a taxi rank at Agios Fokas (OSM). Wikivoyage lists Agios Fokas (dark sand) and Thermes among the island's quieter beaches. The Embros Therma hot springs are about 2.5 km further south-west along the same coast (see separate entry). For a night, go back to Kos Marina or the old harbour.
