Vourkari Anchorage & Quay (Kea)

37° 39.9′ N · 24° 19.5′ E

A pretty fishing village in the north-east arm of Agios Nikolaos Bay. It is Kea's real yacht harbour: a 130 m town quay lined with tavernas and bars, and the best meltemi shelter on the island, so on summer weekends it fills with Athenian boats.

Practical

Quay: about 20-24 berths at the town quay. Moor bow-to, because the bottom shoals quickly to 1.5-2 m near the quay and on both sides of it (mySea, MarinaTips; average depth near the pier 3 m per the Port Fund). Anchor in front of the quay or anywhere in the bay in up to 16 m on mud with some sand and weed. Holding is described from 'moderate' (mySea anchorage) to 'good-very good' (mySea harbour), and the seabed drops off steeply, so lay at least 40 m of chain. Anchors often cross because swinging room is limited. Watch for laid private moorings on the east side of the bay. Shelter: very good from the meltemi, but the quay is a lee shore in the prevailing north wind. Strong westerlies send in an uncomfortable and possibly dangerous swell; if so, move to Korissia. MarinaTips also flags strong S-SE winds. Water and power come from card pedestals, with no fuel. Port Fund of Syros tel. +30 22810 82336. Very crowded on summer weekends; arrive early. The coordinate is the town pier (MarinaTips).
