Agia Irini Archaeological Site (Vourkari)

37° 40.1′ N · 24° 19.6′ E

A Bronze Age town on the little peninsula opposite the Vourkari quay. It reached its height around 1600-1400 BC and was destroyed by an earthquake around 1500 BC. Finds include a temple that Sailingissues calls the oldest in Greece.

Practical

Excavated from 1960, the site includes fortifications with a tower and gate, a drainage and water network, a Mycenaean-style residence and a sanctuary in use from about 2000 BC. About fifty Late Bronze Age clay 'Korai' figurines from here are in the Archaeological Museum in Ioulida. It is a few minutes' walk from the Vourkari quay. Opening hours were not verified, so check locally.
