Santorini Wineries

36° 23.3′ N · 25° 26.2′ E

Volcanic-ash vineyards of Assyrtiko trained into low basket-shaped koulouri make some of Greece's most distinctive white wines, plus the sun-dried sweet Vinsanto. The cooperative Santo Wines pours them on a terrace above the caldera.

Practical

Coordinates are Santo Wines in Pyrgos (OSM/Nominatim), the farmers' cooperative winery open all year with winery tours and a caldera-view terrace (+30 22860 22596 / 22860 23137). Other wineries mapped in OSM: Venetsanos (cliff-edge winery and museum above Athinios, 36.3825 N 25.4315 E), Boutari (Megalochori), Gavalas (Megalochori), Hatzidakis, Estate Argyros (Episkopi Gonias), Canava Roussos, and Domaine Sigalas near Oia (36.4713 N 25.3943 E). Vinsanto must be at least 51% Assyrtiko, from grapes sun-dried 12-14 days and aged at least 24 months in oak (Wikipedia). Book tastings ahead in summer, and use a taxi or tour rather than the tender.
