Rineia Island (Rhenia)
37° 24.5′ N · 25° 13.7′ E
Delos's uninhabited sister island: 14 km2 of bare hills (136 m), deep bays and the Delian necropolis. It's where the dying and women in labour were sent after the Athenian purification of Delos in 426 BC.
Practical
Uninhabited since the 1980s and protected as an archaeological site. Permanent residence and building are banned (MedGulets, Greeka). No ferries, water, fuel or phone lines. The Purification Pit at Agia Kyriaki bay held all the graves removed from Delos, and its finds are in the Mykonos Archaeological Museum. Kounelonisi islet off the NE coast has the church of Agios Georgios. Anchorages: Skinos/South Bay, Miso & Ampelia, Mesianos, Karmou Ammos, Kasari and Parianos (see entries). Day-tour boats arrive late morning, so the bays empty by about 5pm.
