Karmou Ammos Snorkel (Rineia)
37° 25.7′ N · 25° 12.6′ E · approximate
Clear, empty water along the rocky edges of Rineia's north bay, with the island's ancient remains above the west shore. It's the kind of snorkel the Delos tour boats come to Rineia for.
Practical
Snorkel the rocky points either side of the anchorage from the boat or the dinghy. Rineia's waters are among the clearest around Mykonos, with rock formations and reef fish (tour-operator descriptions). Water is above 22C from late June to early October. There are no lifeguards, shade or facilities, and no way to call for help quickly, so keep a dinghy watch (Medgulets). Karmou Ammos is open to the north, so snorkel here only in calm or southerly weather; on meltemi days use the south and east bays (Skinos, Schino coves) instead. Delos is a no-swim zone, but Rineia is not. Leave any pottery or remains in place, since the area is rich in antiquities. Position is approximate, at the Karmou Ammos anchorage (OpenSeaMap).
Best for
A quiet snorkel off your own boat after Delos
Season
Calm or S winds; Jun-Oct warmest
