Red Beach Snorkel (Akrotiri)

36° 20.8′ N · 25° 23.7′ E · approximate

Snorkelling along the rock formations and underwater caverns at the foot of Red Beach's rust-red cliff, in clear water on Santorini's south coast.

Practical

Coordinates: a water point about 100 m south of the OSM/Wikipedia Red Beach position (approx). Snorkel Around the World: underwater caverns and rock formations; snorkel only when the sea is calm; arrive in the morning before the beach fills. Greeka also recommends snorkelling along the rocks. Marine life is modest compared with other Greek islands (same source): the volcanic rock and clarity are the draw. Hazards: landslides from the cliff (parts of the beach closed since 2013, Wikipedia), so stay well off the cliff foot; day-tripper boats come in close in summer, so tow a surface float. Open to the south; anchor off with a trip line (sailingissues).

Best for
