Akrotiri Archaeological Site

36° 21.1′ N · 25° 24.2′ E

A Bronze Age port town buried by the great Theran eruption in the 16th century BC, with streets and multi-storey houses preserved under ash. Its frescoes invite comparison with Pompeii.

Practical

Under a bioclimatic roof since its 2012 reopening; the earlier shelter collapsed in 2005. About 250 m from the Akrotiri village bus terminus (buses from Fira about every 1.5 hours). From the water, it is a short walk from the Akrotiri Beach anchorage. Hours and ticket prices vary between sources (third-party listings in 2025-26 quote EUR 12-20 and split summer and winter hours), so check the official Ministry of Culture ticketing before visiting. Go first thing to beat the cruise groups and the heat.
