Portara East Anchorage (Grotta, Naxos)

37° 6.6′ N · 25° 22.5′ E

The bad-weather alternative on the Grotta side of the Portara causeway, used when the wind goes south or southeast and the harbour side turns rolly.

Practical

mySea gives 4-7 m. Sailingissues: in sirocco (SE) conditions, anchor directly east of the Portara with a line to the easternmost rocks of the islet, not to the isthmus. Noonsite: anchor on the NE side of the isthmus joining the islet to Naxos with a long line ashore. Holding is good, and the spot is sheltered from southerlies but open to the meltemi, so do not stay when the northerly fills in. The Grotta shore is rocky with sea urchins (Greeka).

Best for

Shelter from southerlies right beside town

Season

Only in S-SE winds; open to the meltemi
