Papafragas Cave (Milos)

36° 45.2′ N · 24° 30.2′ E

A narrow sea gorge on the north coast where the cliffs close over a small inlet of turquoise water, reached through a rock tunnel from the sea. It sits beside the Bronze Age site of Phylakopi.

Practical

Greeka: a tiny path leads down to a small strip of sand inside the cave-like cove, surrounded by deep sea caves and vertical rock walls. Swim or kayak in from the sea; the inlet is far too narrow for a yacht or tour boat. The north coast is exposed to the meltemi, so visit only in calm weather; in any swell the entrance is dangerous. Anchor off in settled conditions or come by road (bus stop at the site).

Best for

Snorkelling and swimming through the gorge on a flat-calm morning

Season

Calm days only
