Panagia Kanala Church (Kythnos)
37° 20.7′ N · 24° 26.2′ E
The island's most revered church and one of the major pilgrimage sites of the Cyclades. It holds a Cretan-school icon that, by tradition, fishermen found floating in the channel ('kanali') between Kythnos and Serifos. The present church was built in 1869 in a pine grove above the sea.
Practical
Walk up from the Kanala anchorage. Dress modestly. The great feast is on 15 August, with a procession and a re-enactment of the icon's discovery. Other feasts are held on 8 September, 2 February and 30 June. Position from OpenStreetMap.
