Naxos Town Anchorage (ante-port / Grotta)
37° 6.5′ N · 25° 22.3′ E
The overflow anchorage for Chora, on the Vintzi side between the ferry mole and the Portara causeway. You anchor in a few metres of sand within a short dinghy ride of town, with the marble doorway glowing above you at sunset.
Practical
mySea marks the spot in about 5 m. Sailingissues: Vintzi, just north of the ferry quay, gives meltemi shelter, so anchor in 5 m just south of the Portara. Noonsite: anchor close to the beach in 3-5 m, because further out you get uncomfortable ferry wash. Holding is good and the spot is well protected. Keep clear of the cable that runs parallel to the mole (charted), about 30 m off the breakwater, and of the many charted rocks off the Portara islet (OpenSeaMap). There is a second mySea spot in about 8 m outside the marina breakwater (37.10225, 25.37151) that is more exposed to wash. Expect wakes whenever a ferry docks. Land the dinghy at the marina or on the Vintzi/Grotta shore.
Best for
Free night in town when the marina is full
Season
May-Oct in meltemi (northerlies); move east of the Portara in southerlies
