Meltemi Season (Mykonos & Delos)

37° 26.8′ N · 25° 19.7′ E · approximate

Mykonos is the 'Island of the Winds'. From June to September the meltemi (N-NE) usually fills in by early afternoon at Force 4-5 and often blows Force 5-7 for days. It shapes every anchorage choice around Mykonos, Delos and Rineia.

Practical

Peak July-August; it can persist up to about ten days and sometimes blows through the night (Sailingissues meltemi page). Locally: Ornos gets fierce NE gusts; the south-coast bays (Elia, Agia Anna, Kalo Livadi) and Rineia's Skinos and Miso bays are the shelters; Panormos, Agios Sostis, Fokos and Ftelia on the north coast become untenable; the narrow, shallow Delos channel funnels the wind into steep waves (Sailingissues). The Mykonos-Tinos channel is an acceleration zone. Tactics: make windward legs at dawn, and use the Elia/Kalafatis lee. Warning signs 24-36 hours ahead are rising Balkan pressure, a humidity drop and very clear visibility. Position is Mykonos town (island-wide phenomenon).
