Kouros of Apollonas (Naxos)
37° 10.8′ N · 25° 32.9′ E
A 10.7 m, roughly 80-tonne unfinished colossus of grey Naxian marble, abandoned around 600 BC where it was carved in the ancient quarry above Apollonas. Its beard and cloak suggest it may represent Dionysus rather than a youthful kouros.
Practical
Free open site, a short walk or drive up from Apollonas harbour. A taverna is at the entrance. Wear shoes for the quarry terrain. The surrounding Archaic marble quarry is mapped in OSM (way 42720867).
