37° 3.8′ N · 25° 28.9′ E

Halki, the old capital of Naxos, is a village of neoclassical mansions and Venetian tower-houses in the olive-filled Tragea valley. At its heart is the Vallindras distillery, founded in 1896, still making kitron, the island's citron-leaf liqueur.

Practical

16 km from Chora by bus or taxi. The Vallindras Distillery works mainly as a museum, with old stills and tastings, and sells kitron (Greeka). Kitron comes in green (sweetest, about 30% ABV), clear (about 33%) and yellow (strongest, about 36%), according to Wikipedia. The village has the 9th-century Panagia Protothroni church and the Gratsia and Markopolitis towers. Giannis Tavern is on the square, +30 22850 33023 (Greeka). There is a pharmacy and bakeries in the village (OSM). Distillery hours were not verified, so check locally.
