Eleonora's Falcon Cliffs (Folegandros)

36° 38.5′ N · 24° 55.2′ E · approximate

Folegandros's sheer north-coast cliffs lie inside a Natura 2000 site whose protected birds include Eleonora's falcon. These slim, dark falcons nest colonially on sea cliffs and hunt small migrant birds over the sea in late summer.

Practical

Position approx: about 0.4 nm off the cliffs north of Chora, derived from the Chora and Chrysospilia positions; specific nest sites are not published. Greek Wikipedia: most of the island is a Natura 2000 protected habitat, and the protected birds include Eleonora's falcon (μαυροπετρίτης), Bonelli's eagle, peregrine falcon, Audouin's gull and shag. English Wikipedia: about two-thirds of the world population breeds in Greece, nesting on coastal cliffs, with a delayed breeding season in late summer and early autumn; the birds winter in Madagascar. Best viewed from the boat on a calm day or from the cliff path to Panagia church above Chora. Do not land below cliffs or approach nests.
