Panagia Church Path (Folegandros)
36° 37.8′ N · 24° 55.5′ E
A zig-zag path climbs from Chora to the Panagia, the island's largest church, perched on a rock high above the village. From the top you look down on Chora and the Kastro clinging to the cliff.
Practical
Position from folegandros.gr. The walk takes about 15 minutes from Pounta square on a marked path. Go at sunset, with a light for the descent. The church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin. It was probably built on an ancient temple site, with ancient inscriptions and statue bases in the courtyard. It was once the main church of a convent, and was rebuilt in 1816-1821 (a 1687 inscription records an earlier renovation). Its feast is on 14-15 August; by local custom, at Easter its icon is carried around every house on the island (folegandros.gr). Distances: about 4.5 km from Karavostasis, 6 km from Ano Meria and 5 km from Agkali.
