Ammoudi Bay (Oia)

36° 27.6′ N · 25° 22.2′ E

The tiny fishing inlet below Oia at the northern tip of the caldera, lined with fish tavernas at the foot of the cliff stairs. Sailors use it for a quick stop or a dinghy run to a sunset dinner, not for an overnight berth.

Practical

Sailingissues: exposed to most winds, with a ground swell. Local residents keep their own buoys, some of which are rented out, and the large iron buoys can be dangerous for smaller yachts. The only pier is a short mole used by the small ferry to Thirasia (keep it clear). Most crews lie on the Thirasia moorings across the channel (see Captain John's Moorings (Thirasia)) and come over by tender. Ashore: Ammoudi Fish Tavern, Dimitris and Sunset tavernas, with steps up to Oia. The coordinate is the sailingissues/OpenSeaMap marker for the inlet.

Best for

A lunch or sunset-dinner stop under Oia in settled weather

Season

May–Oct, settled weather only; uncomfortable in swell
