Tupitipiti & Taurere Lagoon Snorkel (south-east motus)

16° 32.7′ S · 151° 41.8′ W

The clear, shallow south-east corner of the lagoon off Pointe Fareone and Tupitipiti point, the closest good snorkeling to the Motu Fare One moorings. Coral heads hold reef fish, and the east-side channel north toward Anau is known for drift snorkels with spotted eagle rays.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM 'snorkeling spot' node off Tupitipiti point. NauticEd puts the snorkeling at the southern tip of Pointe Fareone, in the south-east corner of the lagoon, and describes an eagle-ray snorkel further up the east side where you drift with the dinghy for about a mile in 2–3 knots of current; hold the painter and keep the motor off. At the Anau manta station (separate entry) there is no dinghy tie-off. Approach by dinghy from Motu Fare One (about 1 km). Anchor the dinghy only on sand, never on coral. Coral heads lie close to the surface. Tupitipiti is also the name of an outer-reef dive site on the ocean side (separate entry): do not take the dinghy through the reef. Jet-ski tours use this side of the lagoon, so fly a dive flag or keep a lookout in the dinghy.
