Rays Corridor Lagoon Drift Dive
17° 29.3′ S · 149° 52.5′ W · approximate
A shallow drift dive in the boat channel inside the reef west of Tareu Pass, where flights of spotted eagle rays glide over the coral alongside butterflyfish and bannerfish. It is a good second dive or a dive for days when the outer reef is rough.
Practical
Position from a February 2004 cruiser log (17°29.3'S 149°52.5'W, chart-derived, ±300 m). Depth 3–20 m, visibility around 12 m. The 2004 divers found current in the channel pulling toward Opunohu Pass, with calmer eddies behind the coral wall. This is the marked boat channel used by activity boats, jet skis and cruise-ship tenders: dive only with an operator boat or a dedicated dinghy tender and a dive flag. The Tiki sculptures and the pass wreck snorkel are close by. Feeding sharks and fish is prohibited (2026 brief). Under the 2025 anchoring decree divers may not use occupied ZMR moorings; dive with an operator or from a tended dinghy flying a dive flag.
