Tiki Underwater Exhibition (Tihoti, Papetoai)

17° 29.3′ S · 149° 52.8′ W · approximate

Six submerged tikis and volcanic stone sculptures, 1.5–2 m tall, placed in clear shallow water off Papetoai by artist Tihoti Guy in 1998 as a tribute to ancestors whose beliefs were 'cast into the sea'.

Practical

Approximate: a Nov 2020 Soggy Paws cruiser position (17°29.281'S 149°52.779'W, 'approximately'), which matches the Service du Tourisme 2026 chart (west of Tareu Pass, inside the reef off Pointe Temaeroa); ±100 m. The cruiser counted 7 tikis in 2–3 m of water, and the 'Tiki anchorage' sits right across from them. Accessible on your own by kayak, paddleboard or dinghy, or with a lagoon activity provider who will help you find it. Shallow; no fins near coral and use a surface marker buoy, because traffic is heavy. A PGEM 'submerged sculptures' visit site.
