Maraamu Trade-Wind Surges

17° 40.0′ S · 149° 28.0′ W · approximate

In the austral winter a reinforced south-east trade, the maraamu, can blow 25–35 knots for days, with big seas in the channels and violent squalls in the lagoons.

Practical

Coordinate is the centre of Tahiti. The maraamu blows June to August from the south-east at 25–35 kn, with open-water seas to 8–9 ft lasting several days (charter base guide). At Marina Taina, gusts reach 35–40 kn in squalls or during the maraamu season (SE trade, June–September), so let out plenty of scope (Noonsite). Winds are E trades, SE in the austral winter and NE in summer (2026 Moorea brief). Plan the Tahiti–Moorea and Tahiti–Leewards legs around a lull.
