Fautaua Valley & Waterfall Hike

17° 34.9′ S · 149° 32.0′ W

A valley walk from Papeete's back streets to one of Tahiti's tallest waterfalls, past Pierre Loti's bathing pool, a marae and the ruined Fachoda fort.

Practical

Coordinates from Tahiti Heritage (Fautaua valley). From the Polynésienne des Eaux water-company gate, a wide, shaded track runs about 3 km to the Fachoda bridge: easy and family-friendly, with a marae beside it. Beyond the bridge the path is harder: either follow the river to the foot of the falls or cross the small bridge to reach the top. Rock pools and natural slides lie further on. The trail climbs to the Toevere col (about 600 m) and on to the Diadème col (Tahiti Heritage). Ask in Papeete whether a permit is currently needed for the water-catchment area. Close to Marina de Papeete by taxi.

Best for

A big waterfall within reach of downtown
