Maraamu Trade-Wind Season

16° 39.9′ S · 151° 32.3′ W · approximate

From June to August the reinforced southeast trade, the maraamu, can blow 25–35 knots for days. It makes the open-water legs to and from Taha'a rough while the lagoon stays sheltered.

Practical

Position approximate, at Paipai Pass. Base guide: Leeward Islands winds are usually E–SE 15–20 knots, rising to 25, with a 3–5 ft swell. In maraamu, seas reach 8–9 ft in open water for a few days, and the Bora Bora–Taha'a passage can be uncomfortable because it is exposed to a large swell. The 2025 brief says trades blow SE in winter and NE in austral summer. Forecasts: meteo.pf, and VHF 13 (in French) after an announcement on VHF 16, at 6:30am, 12pm, 4pm and 8pm; HF 8803 kHz at 7:30am, 12:30pm, 4:30pm and 8:30pm.
