Cyclone Season & Austral Winter Trades (Moorea)
17° 32.0′ S · 149° 50.0′ W · approximate
Moorea's year splits between the cooler austral-winter trades (southeast) and the hot, wet summer (northeast winds), which is also cyclone season.
Practical
Pin is the island centre (Wikivoyage geo). Winds: E trades, SE in austral winter and NE in summer (2026 brief). Most anchorages are open to the north, so northerlies make them uncomfortable. Strong venturi gusts drop off the mountains into Cook's and Opunohu bays. Cyclone season is November to April (see area notes); Papeete marinas are the usual refuge. Tide is only 20–30 cm (solar), high at noon and midnight. Météo-France forecasts on VHF 13 at 6:30am, 12pm, 4pm and 8pm (French) after a VHF 16 announcement; HF 8803 kHz at 7:30am, 12:30pm, 4:30pm, 8:30pm.
