Taravai West Pass Snorkel

23° 8.5′ S · 135° 3.0′ W · approximate

The reefs along the western (NW) pass and off Taravai's west side have the Gambier's clearest water: Pitufa saw coral at 15 m that seemed 'a sleeve length away'. The compendium lists the area as one of the lagoon's dive sites.

Practical

approx: no published site position. The pin sits between the NW pass approach and Taravai's western bays, so choose the exact spot by eye in good light. Pitufa calls the main entrance the 'west pass'. Dive only with your own gear: there are no dive shops in the Gambier, and pearl farms might refill tanks. Avoid the pass channel itself while ships or swell are running, and dive or snorkel near slack water.

Best for

The clearest water in the lagoon
