Anganui Bay (Taravai West)

23° 8.7′ S · 135° 2.9′ W

A large, uninhabited bay on Taravai's west side with a reef in the middle and long sandy beaches. It is a well-protected, easy jumping-off point for heading north.

Practical

Coordinate from Pitufa (2015): 13-15 m of sand with good holding, approached from the north. Two long beaches lie on the E and SE sides and smaller ones to the S (the long beach is very soft sand). At low tide there are no clear dinghy channels through the coral, but at high tide you can go straight over. Soggy Paws staged here to leave for the north (2010). It is so sheltered from the east that you cannot feel conditions outside, but departure is easy. Snorkeling is best on the reefs farther out, where Pitufa met curious black-tip reef sharks, while baby sharks patrol close to the beaches.

Best for

Staging before departure; shark snorkeling
