Taravai Hikes and Gardens

23° 9.0′ S · 135° 1.4′ W · approximate

Trails from Taravai village climb through gardens and pine forest to a rock face with a lone tree on the ridge, or cross the island to Edouard and Denise's homestead on the south bay.

Practical

approx: the pin is the trailhead behind the church; no published position. Take the grassy road behind Valerie and Herve's house past the church. At a large clearing, choose down to Edouard's house (60-90 minutes) or up to the ridge and the rock face with the single tree (1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 from the village). Ropes have been fixed across washed-out sections. Pitufa adds a side trip up the SE ridge, mostly under pines, to a peak over the village (add about an hour). Trails get overgrown, muddy and wasp-ridden after rain, and some groups have needed a machete.
