Taravai Sunday Potluck (Valerie and Herve)
23° 8.9′ S · 135° 1.3′ W · approximate
Every Sunday, Valerie and Herve open their garden to cruisers for a barbecue potluck with volleyball, ping-pong and petanque. It is a Gambier institution.
Practical
approx: the pin is the village shore by the anchorage. Call on VHF 77 to say you are coming. Bring meat or fish for Herve's grill, a side or dessert to share, drinks for everyone and for the hosts (they like wine, rum, beer and gin), and your own plate, cutlery, cup and a chair. They charge nothing and often provide fish, pork or goat, so bring generously. Sign the guest book, help wash up (first rinse in the sea) and don't go into the house with sandy feet. Herve also takes cruisers spearfishing to show which fish are safer, and goat hunting in season. Valerie teaches flower crowns and shows her sand art, and has cut hair cheaply.
