Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Church (Hitianau)

16° 42.2′ S · 145° 21.4′ W

Faaite's coral-white village church, built around 1900 and fully renovated in 2008. It faces the lagoon and fish parks.

Practical

Coordinate from OpenStreetMap. Wikipedia (FR) dates it to about 1900, renovated in 2008. In September 1987 the village suffered a notorious episode of collective religious hysteria, the 'affaire des bûchers', in which six people were killed. It remains a painful memory, so don't raise it casually. Sunday mass is the week's main gathering; dress modestly.
