Faaite Fish Parks (Parcs à Poissons)
16° 42.1′ S · 145° 21.2′ W · approximate
Stone-walled fish traps in the current by Faaite's pass. Fish swim in on the flood and are taken alive as needed, a sustainable catch that feeds the village.
Practical
Coordinate approximate: set between the town quay and the pass beacon (OpenStreetMap), where Sloepmouche (2008) describes drift-snorkelling 'past the town pier and the fish traps'. The 2021 government sheet counts 16 fish parks on Faaite, plus 2 fish-attracting devices (DCP) offshore. BoatNews (2022): the parks 'in front of the village' let residents fish without depleting the resource. The traps are family property: look but don't swim into them, touch the walls or take fish, and keep the dinghy and anchor chain well clear. You may be able to buy fresh fish from the owners; ask at the quay.
