Faaite Water Plant and Ice Machine
16° 42.2′ S · 145° 21.4′ W · approximate
Hitianau has a public drinking-water plant that is barely used and a commune ice machine, both rare in a small atoll.
Practical
Coordinate approximate: village centre. Ask at the mairie for the plant and the ice machine. The 2021 government sheet: a potable-water plant inaugurated in 2012, 'peu utilisée (1 fcp/l)', so water was sold at 1 XPF per litre (2021, verify locally). There are also a 150 m³ flexible tank and five 50,000 L cisterns at the sports hall, and households use their own rain tanks. BoatNews (2022) said the desalination plant had stopped working and residents relied on rainwater, so ask at the mairie whether it runs before planning to fill tanks. Bring jerry cans; there is no hose on the quay. The commune ice machine (2021) serves fishermen; ask whether you can buy a bag.
