Rikitea Main Dock and Dinghy Landing
23° 7.1′ S · 134° 58.1′ W · approximate
The concrete supply-ship quay in the middle of Rikitea's waterfront, with a floating pontoon that is the best-protected place to leave the dinghy. Two smaller landings north and south serve the shops and the trash point.
Practical
approx: placed in Rikitea village from the compendium's walking directions relative to the main dock and St Michael Cathedral (Wikipedia position); expect an error of up to about 300 m. Main dock: the supply ship and the Commune's steel airport shuttle Tokani berth here, so never block the Tokani's slip or the local fishing boats. Pitufa found the floating pontoon on the main pier the best-protected dinghy spot. Southern dock: behind the post office near St Michael (to the left when facing the main dock). The approach gets shallow, and pangas park there, so leave them room. Northern dock: behind the multi-purpose hall and sports centre (to the right), usually with a barge alongside you can tie to. It is shallow at low tide, a bit rough in SE winds, and the best landing for the trash and recycling bins. You can also beach the dinghy behind Magasin JoJo (watch the tide), or tie briefly to the wall behind the bakery. That wall is a local pick-up spot, so stay no more than 20-30 minutes. Do not leave shoes in a beached dinghy, since Irie lost two pairs of flip-flops (2013).
