Gendarmerie Rikitea (Port of Entry)

23° 7.2′ S · 134° 58.2′ W · approximate

The only port of entry in the Gambier. Every yacht reports here on arrival, whether from abroad or from another French Polynesian island.

Practical

approx: placed in Rikitea village from the compendium's walking directions relative to the main dock and St Michael Cathedral (Wikipedia position); expect an error of up to about 300 m. Turn left (south) from the main dock and it is on the left, behind a gate with a large sign. Hours are inconsistent, and the office closes for lunch from 12 pm to 2 pm. Clearance (Kiskadee, May 2024): before arrival, the captain completes the online 'Declaration unique plaisance Polynesie francaise' on demarches-simplifiees.fr. It covers ship, owner, crew and declared items, and one dossier is valid for all of French Polynesia. Ashore, the gendarmerie was the only office they needed, and EU crews were stamped on request (UK and US passports are always stamped). Bring passports, ship's papers and the dossier number. Non-EU crews need the visa, bond or agent arrangements described in the area entry rules. In 2019 long-stay-visa holders bought a 9,000 XPF fiscal stamp at the post office (verify locally). After the gendarmerie, go to the mairie to pay trash fees. Clear out here too before leaving French Polynesia from the Gambier.
