Rikitea Fuel (supply-ship barrels and JoJo gasoline)
23° 7.1′ S · 134° 58.1′ W · approximate
There is no fuel dock anywhere in the Gambier: diesel and gasoline arrive in 200-litre drums on the supply ships, and small amounts of gasoline come from Magasin JoJo.
Practical
approx: located at the main dock where the supply ship lies. Pre-order a 200-litre drum of diesel (gazole) or gasoline (essence) by calling or texting Ignace on the Taporo VIII (+689 87 28 16 09; ship office +689 40 42 63 93, taporo@mail.pf). He will tell you when the ship leaves Tahiti. It reaches Rikitea in about 6-7 days direct, or 14-15 days when it calls at other islands first. The Nuku Hau (+689 40 54 99 54, contact@snp.pf) also carries fuel. 2021 drum prices were 24,600 XPF for diesel and 25,700 XPF for gasoline (verify locally). The ships take cash XPF only and do NOT accept the duty-free fuel certificate. Fill jerry cans at the dock from the drum with the supplied pump, which is safer than going alongside the ship. Pitufa saw yachts take a minimum of 200 litres from the ship's hose. Split a drum with other boats, or rent one for 5,500 XPF plus fuel and store it ashore with a local. JoJo sells gasoline at about US$10 per gallon (2021). Ships do not come during the holidays, a gap of 6-8 weeks.
