Rapa Iti Gendarmerie Check-in

27° 37.1′ S · 144° 20.0′ W · approximate

Rapa is not an international port of entry, but every yacht is expected to report to the island's single policeman in Ha'urei (Ahurei) on arrival, after clearing into French Polynesia elsewhere.

Practical

Approximate position: Ha'urei village centre (OSM village node); the office is not mapped. Pitufa (Nov 2018): 'we went to check in with the (only) policeman', who opened his office on a Saturday for them and said only 11 sailboats called in 2017. The compendium notes that even yachts arriving from other Polynesian ports are asked to check in at the gendarmerie on every Austral island. Clear into French Polynesia first (Tubuai, Raivavae or Rurutu in the Australs, or Papeete/Gambier). No published hours: go ashore on arrival with boat papers, passports and your French Polynesia clearance. Rapa also has its own traditional council (Tohitu) that decides land and cultural matters, so ask the mairie before landing on outlying beaches or hiking far afield.
