Rapa Fruit Dove and Seabirds (Rapa Iti)
27° 38.0′ S · 144° 20.0′ W · approximate
Rapa is an Important Bird Area: the critically endangered Rapa fruit dove (about 160 birds in 2017) survives in its forest, and the Rapa shearwater breeds only on nearby islets.
Practical
Representative position: Tiringa peak (OSM) on the ridge south of Ha'urei, toward the Manatau reserve, which protects animals and forts in southern Rapa (en.wikipedia). Murphy's petrel nests in small numbers; bristle-thighed curlews visit. Threats are habitat loss, feral cats and hunting, so keep any ship's cat aboard and never let rats ashore. Watch quietly with binoculars on the fort walks.
