Rangiroa Anchoring Tax and No-Anchor Areas

14° 56.9′ S · 147° 40.9′ W

The local rules for yachts in Rangiroa: a small per-person anchoring tax paid to the gendarmerie, no anchoring in Avatoru Pass because of a submarine cable, and chain-floating to protect the coral.

Practical

Coordinate is the Gendarmerie (the existing port-of-entry entry). Anchoring tax: 150 XPF per person per day (2011 cruiser reports); Noonsite (June 2024) still lists a small 150 XPF anchoring tax payable to the gendarmerie on arrival; verify locally. In 2011 a gendarme and the tax collector toured the Kia Ora anchorage by boat on Wednesday and/or Thursday mornings; if you are ashore or elsewhere in the lagoon you may miss them, so go to the gendarmerie in Avatoru. Do not anchor in Avatoru Pass: underwater cable (Noonsite). The Avatoru municipal dock may be used for a few hours only in an emergency or to load something heavy, after checking with the mairie that no cargo ship is due. Float your chain everywhere (Noonsite, compendium). In 2019 the Kia Ora Resort asked boats anchored directly in front of it to move. Leave Tiputa Pass itself clear: ferries, water taxis and dive boats run constantly and divers surface in the pass. The Aquarium/Motu Nohi Nohi reef and the Blue Lagoon are treated as no-take, no-feeding areas.
