Orare Manta Rays (Hao)

18° 18.2′ S · 140° 49.5′ W · approximate

The reef finger at Orare on Hao's eastern lagoon is known locally for manta rays. Snorkel the edges from the dinghy and you may have them to yourself.

Practical

Sugar Shack (June 2020) describes Orare, just south of the 'finger', as 'a pretty little spot known for its manta rays'. Anchor at the Orare Manta Anchorage (farther out has fewer bommies). Duplicat (2017) adds that mantas are often seen in Kaki Pass as well. No-touch rule: keep at least 2-3 m away, don't chase, and don't dive down on them. Visibility in Hao's lagoon can be poor. Sightings are not guaranteed, and no source gives a season. Position approximate: on the reef finger next to the Orare anchoring waypoint (18°18.2286S / 140°49.4734W).
