Mount Mokoto Hike (Mangareva)

23° 7.6′ S · 134° 59.1′ W

Mangareva's second summit (423 m), reached by the right-hand fork of the Mt Duff trail, slightly steeper and with its own sweeping lagoon panorama.

Practical

Coordinate is the summit (French Wikipedia). Start as for Mt Duff: road over the pass from St Michael, then the signed trail, and take the right fork about a third of the way up. Allow 1.5-2 hours up. Ropes are fixed in places. A ridge trail continues west from Mokoto and drops through forest to Atiaoha on the north side. It was marked with red paint except for the last 200 m, which was a bushwhack to the road (Feb 2021). From Atiaoha follow the dirt road right and return over the pass on the main road. Wait two days after rain.

Best for

A quieter summit and a ridge loop

Season

Any dry spell; avoid for 2 days after rain
