A carved wooden memorial on the western shore of Taiohae Bay showing the route Herman Melville took when he jumped ship in 1842 and walked over to the Typee valley.

Practical

Coordinate is the OpenStreetMap 'Hermann Melville' memorial node by the western cemetery. Kandu (2016): a carved tree stump with a weathered roof, tucked in on the shore side next to the western cemetery. Melville deserted the whaler Acushnet in July 1842 and spent weeks with the Tai Pi before writing 'Typee' (1846). Sea-Seek also lists a Melville stele in Taiohae.
