Haraiki Atoll

17° 28.0′ S · 143° 28.0′ W

A small triangular atoll 7 x 5 km, officially uninhabited, south of Makemo. Its narrow south-facing pass is battered by rollers and rarely used.

Practical

Coordinates are the atoll center (English Wikipedia). Pass: narrow, 3 m deep, at the south point between two islets; faces due south and is hazardous because of heavy rollers (South Pacific Anchorages, via Soggy Paws). Lagoon about 10.4 sq km. Satellite imagery shows a few buildings and planted land on the north shore (Wikipedia). Boenechea sighted it in 1772. No services. Pass status: French Wikipedia describes a 'wide natural pass on the south side' into an 11 km² lagoon, while South Pacific Anchorages calls it narrow and 3 m deep. No cruiser report of entering or anchoring exists in the sources consulted, so treat the anchorage as unsurveyed. People: about 20 people live there part-time making copra on every motu; 1 permanent resident in 2017 (French Wikipedia). Attached to Makemo commune.
